The Afternoons mystery melody – mystery solved!

January 6, 2011

You may or may not have been following the saga of a song by The Afternoons that’s been bothering me because a part of it has a melody that I’ve heard it somewhere before, but just couldn’t quite identify it.

Until this very moment, that is. I’m very pleased to say that I’m now in a position to shout out:

My friend Stonefish (Hi, Stonefish!) finally figured out the other song that’s been eluding me. A thousand thanks, fellow music lover. And a huge thank you to everyone else who offered suggestions. Much obliged for all the help, eagle-eared listeners.

So, without further delay, may I present to you – courtesy of Stonefish’s magnificent brain – two songs that share a chorus:

The Afternoons – “FM (Bys Ar Dy Ddeial)” (2007)

Cliff Richard & The Shadows – “In The Country” (1966)

The Afternoons mystery melody – the saga continues

January 5, 2011

Yesterday I asked for help in identifying a tune that’s driving me potty because I can’t place where I’ve heard it before. Grrr.

A few people have offered their thoughts so far, and I’m extremely grateful to all of them. They’ve pointed out that the song is reminiscent of:

I’d go along with all of that, but the suggestions haven’t focused on the only thing about the song that’s making me write these extra posts: the tune in the chorus.

This is the tune in question:

The Afternoons – “FM (Bys Ar Dy Ddeial)” (2007) (excerpt)

That’s what’s causing me to waste inordinate amounts of time wracking my brain trying to think of what it reminds me of. A part of my brain (a very small part) is telling me that the other tune is in a bubblegum song. Maybe.

What is that other song?

(*The verse in “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” reminds me of the verses in The Four Seasons’ “December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)”.)

Song of the day: The Afternoons – "FM (Bys Ar Dy Ddeial)"

January 4, 2011

I’ve been listening to Baby, You Know The Deal, a compilation album by Welsh band The Afternoons, and enjoying it. As I listened to track 10, “FM (Bys Ar Dy Ddeial)”, I had one of those “Hey, I know that tune!” moments. There’s a tune in it that reminds me so much of another song, but I can’t for the life of me figure out what that other song is.

Because I’m now officially at the hair-tearing stage, I’m asking you, gentle reader, to have a listen and, if possible, tell me what that other song is. Please! I’m begging you!

If you’re up for the challenge (and I sincerely hope you are), the tune in question is the one that starts each chorus (you can’t miss it). If you could tell me what it sounds like, I’d be much obliged (and eternally grateful):

What is that other tune?
