Musical coincidences # 282

August 10, 2012

My fabulously alert daughter (Hi, Natalie!) spotted this coincidence. Unfortunately, it turned out not to be a coincidence at all. (I’ll get to that later.)

First of all, Natalie said to me “Have you heard Ariana Grande‘s song? It sounds like that song you hear on the radio all the time.”

Ariana Grande is a tween actor/singer currently appearing in a tween sitcom called Victorious. Natalie follows the acting careers, music careers, romantic entanglements, fashion tips etc. of Ariana and her fellow Victorious cast members.

This is what prompted Natalie’s “You should put this on your blog”:

Ariana Grande – “Put Your Hearts Up” (2011) (excerpt)

Young Natalie was referring to this:

4 Non Blondes – “What’s Up? (1992) (excerpt)

When I heard that I thought “You beauty! That’s one Grade-A rip-off. Thank you, Natalie! Blog, here I come!”

Natalie found out some information about the Ariana Grande song. One thing she found out was this:

For her new single “Put Your Hearts Up”, Ariana teamed up with rock musician and songwriter Linda Perry to create the song. Perry has created hit songs for Pink, Christina Aguilera, and Gwen Stefani. The song even features a section from Linda’s song “What’s Up?”.

(From Oh No They Didn’t!.)

So it wasn’t a rip-off at all. Linda Perry gave the melody to Ariana for her song.

Ah well.
