Musical coincidences # 274

July 10, 2012

My friend Michael (Hi, Michael!) sent me this coincidence.

Before we get to it, I have an awkward confession to make. When Michael told me that the start of The Big Dish‘s “European Rain” sounded like The Stranglers‘ “Skin Deep”, I thought “This’ll be easy”. I prided myself on being a Stranglers fan, and proceeded to puff myself up, confident in the knowledge that if anything sounded like any part of any Stranglers song I’d be able to spot it in a flash no matter how small the similarity. I started listening to the Big Dish song and thought “Hey, that doesn’t sound anything like ‘Skin Deep’! What’s Michael playing at?”. I then played “Skin Deep” and realised: “Oops – I was thinking of ‘Golden Brown‘.”

Update: Blogger told me that something on this page (Blogger never tells you exactly what) contravenes the wishes of a record company, and I must get rid of it or there will be dire consequences (like having my entire blog deleted, which actually happened just over a year ago). So I’ve deleted the Stranglers MP3s, because I’m guessing it is that band’s record company, the rather large EMI, who have decided that an Australian blogger should definitely not, under any circumstances, allow you to hear any part of their band’s music.
