Song of the day: The Chevelles – "Get It On"

November 4, 2009

It’s time to blow some dust out of your speakers.

Here are The Chevelles, a good solid meat-and-potatoes rock band hailing from Western Australian, with “Get It On” (2002) (no, not the T.Rex song):

Steven Van Zandt (a.k.a. Little Steven, garage rock aficionado) provides a pretty accurate description of the band:

“It’s the Who meets the Ramones meets the Easybeats meets Beach Blanket Bingo! It’s the criminals Australia wants to ship back to England and call it even! It’s the High Priests of the Barbarella Girl God Love Cult! It’s the Chevelles!”

The band is signed to Little Steven’s record label, Wicked Cool Records. And it’s just occurred to me that if the band ever left that label, then Little Steven, if asked why he looks like he hasn’t slept in days, could legitimately say that it’s because he’s “dis-Chevelled.” (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

“Get It On” appears on The Chevelles’ best-of, Barbarella Girl God (2008), as good an introduction to the band as you could want. (Little Steven compiled it). Even The All Music Guide enjoyed it a fair bit (that’s probably because it’s a good solid meat-and-potatoes rock album).

As a bonus, and also on Barbarella Girl God, here’s a well-known Yardbirds song given the Chevelles treatment:

Here’s the original to give you an idea of just how revved-up The Chevelles’ version is:
