Musical coincidences # 234

There’s currently a brouhaha concerning two artists, Australian chanteuse Delta Goodrem and Canadian band The Arcade Fire. Accusations are flying around (predominantly from aggrieved Arcade Fire fans) that Delta deliberately ripped off the fiery chaps.

I’ve now heard both tracks and I don’t think there’s been any ripping off. I think it’s a coincidence.

To me, this is isn’t much of a brouhaha at all. It’s closer to a brouha, or maybe only a brou.

If you want to delve deeper into this matter (I don’t), here a few links:

And here are the fury-inducing songs:

Plus a mashup:

In the world of rip-offs, I think that’s a whole heap o’ nothin’. To me, they’re both generic relentless dancy songs that share a beat and a couple of chords, just like dozens of other generic relentless dancy songs.

Although I haven’t heard much in the way of those kinds of songs and don’t profess to be any kind of authority in that area, I reckon you might as well compare those two songs to Lady Gaga‘s “The Edge Of Glory“:

Or Madonna‘s “Ray Of Light“:

To me, they’re all generic relentless dancy songs, and I have trouble spotting the difference between any of them.

Today’s musical coincidence involves Australia’s current reigning princess of pop and a bit of funk. Oh yeah.

This is the main melody of the chorus of Delta Goodrem‘s “Not Me, Not I” (2003):

Sound familiar to you? It sounds familiar to me – speed it up a little, put a little funk in the trunk, and hey presto:

That’s the main melody of the chorus of Earth, Wind and Fire‘s “Fantasy” (1977).

Here are both songs in full:
