Song of the day: Disguise – "Hey Baby"

November 4, 2012

I must admit that this made my day the other day. (Day made!)

My friend Michael (Hi, Michael!) was listening to an extremely obscure 1978 power pop song called “Hey Baby”, by a British band called Disguise. Michael brought it to my attention because of what he saw on the record label as he was listening to the song.

On the label were the usual things – e.g., name of song, name of band, name of label, date of release etc. – and the name of the writer of the song.

Michael saw that the person who wrote “Hey Baby” was… me.

Except it wasn’t.

“Hey Baby” was released in 1978 (October 24 to be precise). I was 17 and 1978, and I was nowhere near an English recording studio at the time.

But I’m pleased to say that my namesake (Hi, Peter!) not only wrote the song but also sang and played guitar on it.

Mighty good.

Here then is not me with “Hey Baby”:

By the way, I’d like to point out that when I listen to “Hey Baby” I hear a little musical coincidence.

When Peter “Not that Peter” Scott sings “Oh yeah” in “Hey Baby” it reminds me of The Beatles doing pretty much the same thing in “I’ll Get You“…
