This coincidence involves a backwards drum beat (that’s the coincidence), something that messes with my brain. This percussive legerdemain is basically a regular beat played in reverse, with the snare drum playing the first beat and the bass drum playing the off beats. So instead of “boom tish, boom tish”, it’s “tish boom, tish boom”. It’s so unusual in a pop song that I’ve only ever heard it utilise in two:
The Fortunes – “Freedom Come, Freedom Go” (1971) (excerpt)

If you know of any other songs that have backwards drum beats in them, I’d be happy to put them here.
I’d like to thank fellow Australian blogger Stonefish (Hi, Stoney!) for prompting this coincidence. He played “Freedom Come, Freedom Go” on his blog the other day, and that got me thinking…
