Musical coincidences # 117

July 4, 2011

Today’s coincidence is purely lyrical. It’s not actually about specific lyrics (not like “Both songs have the word ‘octopus’ in them!”), but the lyrical theme in both songs is remarkably similar (read: virtually identical). I don’t need to play you bits of each track – I’ll just play you both songs in their entirety and you’ll hear for yourself:

The Red Button – “I Can’t Forget” (2011)

Fountains Of Wayne – “The Girl I Can’t Forget” (2005)

Bonus coincidence involving another song on
As Far As Yesterday Goes

The first track on As Far As Yesterday Goes is “Caught In The Middle”, and this bit of its verse…

The Red Button – “Caught In The Middle” (2011) (excerpt)

…reminds me of the first song that John Lennon ever wrote:

Gerry & The Pacemakers – “Hello Little Girl (1963) (excerpt)

I know it’s not a strong coincidence at all, but I noticed it, and it’s here because of that other song on As Far As Yesterday Goes.

Here the full versions:

And the first commercial recording of Hello Little Girl”, recorded two weeks earlier than the above Pacemakin’ Gerry version:
