Musical coincidences # 364

February 15, 2013

My friend Michael spotted this one. Thanks, O Michael!

By the way, I had to slightly rename one of the artists because their record company doesn’t take too kindly to bloggers mentioning them on blogs.

Musical coincidences # 248

May 22, 2012

Australian band Splurge recently made their album, The Cure For The Cure, available for free on their website (Thanks, guys!), and the band’s largesse prompted this particular coincidence.

Track 3 on the album, the non-cheery “She’s Not The One”, begins like so:

Splurge – “She’s Not The One” (2006) (excerpt)

And it reminds me of:

Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls – “Somebody’s Forgetting Somebody (Somebody’s Letting Somebody Down)” (1987) (excerpt)

Song of the day: A chap – "Leaps And Bonds"

March 3, 2012

Here’s Australia’s Greatest Living Songwriter™ with one of his lighter* songs:

A chap whose record company seems moderately litigious – “Leaps And Bounds” (1986)

Incidentally, a part of that song’s middle eight was featured in a Musical coincidence a long, long time ago.

(*No, I don’t mean it’s the kind of song that inspires people at concerts to hold up their lighters.)

Song of the day: Paul Kelly And The Coloured Girls – "Dumb Things"

September 18, 2011

Today’s post is a two-for-one deal courtesy of an American record company thinking people wouldn’t want to hear an Australian song as it originally sounded.

Here’s Paul Kelly’s splendid “Dumb Things” released in Australia in 1987 on Mushroom Records:

And here’s Paul Kelly’s “Dumb Things” remixed and foisted upon the American market in 1988 by A&M Records:

Song of the day: Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls – "Crosstown"

August 27, 2011

Although I don’t think today’s song is anywhere near the best work by Australia’s Greatest Living Songwriter©, I like it a lot because it’s nice and bouncy, and because it reminds me of both Buddy Holly and The Beach Boys:

Incidentally, I was originally going to play you a different Paul Kelly song today but I thought it might have been a bit too low-key for you. It’s an obscure single by Paul that didn’t chart, but I absolutely adore it. Actually, I think I’ll play it tomorrow anyway.

Yep, I’ll play it tomorrow.
