Song of the (birth)day: Rick Astley – "Together Forever"

June 22, 2013

I have never admitted this before but I am a huge Rick Astley fan.

The Natalie of the household is 17 today (Happy Birthday, Natalie!), and in addition to granting her the birthday wish of making the above statement, I said, “Natalie, you can choose a song for the blog. It’s your day. Anything you want. Any song at all.”

Natalie chose this:

Rick Astley – “Together Forever (1988)

Natalie wanted me to comment on the video. I can’t think of much to say about it except for this:

  1. I have trouble picking the difference between this and all of Rick Astley’s other songs.
  2. The girl at the start of the video is cute. And so is Rick.
  3. The background colours were so pastel that I thought I was trapped inside a gelato factory.
  4. The expression on Rick’s face at the end of the video says one thing and one thing only. Rick is saying “Really?”

Oh, and I’ve been told to say it’s awesome.

Song of the day: Rick Astley – "She Wants To Dance With Me"

June 11, 2013

Today’s song is a request from the soon-to-be-17-year-old in the household (Hi, Natalie!) who informs me that this track is, and I quote, the “Best Song Ever!”.

Rick Astley – “She Wants To Dance With Me (1988)

Actually, there’s another song that Natalie loves and wants me to put on the blog as well. It’s not even remotely like the Rick Astley song (it’s power metal instead), so I might play you that tomorrow.

Song of the day: Rick Astley – "Never Gonna Give You Up"

August 12, 2012

The appearance of Rick Astley‘s “Never Gonna Give You Up” here is entirely due to the pester power of daughter Natalie (Hi, Natalie!). For the last x amount of months (it’s been plenty), Natalie has been asking pleading demanding that I put her favourite song on this blog.

As a dutiful (and worn-down-from-pester-power) parent, I relented:

Rick Astley – “Never Gonna Give You Up (1987)

I guess this post could be considered the worst case of Rickrolling ever presented on the Internet (i.e., you know you’re going to hear the song).

I’ve been told by someone (I won’t say who, otherwise Natalie will tell me off) to say that “Never Gonna Give You Up” is the best song I’ve ever heard.

I’m here to tell you that no amount of pester power will get me to say that.

Musical coincidences # 134

October 23, 2011

I must admit that this coincidence is one of the oddest I’ve ever noticed, as the two artists make very strange musical bedfellows.

I discovered this coincidence when I got Rickrolled the other day. I was on YouTube, listening to bass solos by Led Zeppelin‘s John Paul Jones. (I’m a bass player, and it’s the kind of thing bass players do: go to YouTube and listen to bass solos.)

Anyway, something claiming to be a “John Paul Jones Epic Lemon Song Bass Solo (VERY RARE)” turned out to be Rick Astley‘s “Never Gonna Give You Up” (enter at your own risk):

Unfortunately, once that chorus entered my head it stayed there for the rest of the day. As I was hearing that chorus over and over again in me noggin, it dawned on me that I’d heard that insistent rhythm (“Never gonna GIVE YOU UP, never gonna LET YOU DOWN…” etc.) somewhere else:

Iron Maiden – “Run To The Hills (1982) (excerpt)
