Musical coincidences # 277

July 21, 2012

Here’s another coincidence from Michael. (Hi, Michael!)

Michael noticed that the following not-terribly-well-known song is pretty much a mixture of two other, exceptionally-well-known songs. Because the coincidence is so noticeable, all I can say in response to Michael is: “You’re not wrong there, baby”.

The formula is simple:

Julian Covey & The Machine – “A Little Bit Hurt” (1967)

The Spencer Davis Group – “Gimme Some Lovin’ (1966)

The Kinks – “You Really Got Me (1964)

Musical coincidences # 229

Today’s coincidence was supplied by my friend Pete (Hi, Pete!).

Dollar – “Shooting Star” (1979) (excerpt)

Yep. That sounds similar enough to me. Thanks, Pete.

Semi-Urgent Update:

I’ve been informed by Pete that the MP3 of the above Dollar track I had was not the original but a re-recording. (Note to Dollar: why re-record your own song? Wasn’t the first version good enough?) Here’s the original recording:

Dollar – “Shooting Star” (1979) (the correct one) (excerpt)

End of Semi-Urgent Update.

But that’s not where today’s coincidence ends. No sirree.

When I read Wikipedia’s entry for “Gimme Some Lovin'”, I saw this:

The basic riff of the song was borrowed from the Homer Banks song “(Ain’t That) A Lot of Love”.

That was news to me. Suitably intrigued, I found the Homer Banks song. Here’s the main riff:

Wow. Homer was ripped off big time.
