I’m in a boogie mood, baby:

PS: Many apologies for the sound quality of the MP3. It was the best one I could find.

Song of the day: Stars – "Mighty Rock"

July 8, 2009

Yesterday’s musical coincidence got me in the mood for a little more of Adelaide’s rootin’ tootin’ good ole boys, Stars. Here’s their biggest hit, “Mighty Rock” (1977):

I don’t know why Stars were so fascinated with the America of days gone by. They engaged in a variety of Wild West activities in their songs – for example, they played “With A Winning Hand,” they had “Gold Fever,” they lamented “The Last Of The Riverboats” etc, and they definitely let you know that “West Is The Way”.

However, they weren’t the only Australian band loving that West Coast/Southern States, Eagles/Lynyrd Skynyrd/Joe Walsh, yee-ha/boogie amalgam. Songwriter Brian Cadd sounded very Americana-esque early in his career with Axiom, The Dingoes had a huge hit with “Way Out West” (1973), and even the Little River Band started out as an extra-smooth country rock band.

If you still want to saddle up, as a bonus here’s “Quick On The Draw” (1976) y’all:

Musical coincidences # 12

July 7, 2009

The main riff of John Cougar‘s “Hurts So Good” (1982) sounds a little like this:

Back in the late 70s there was a band from Adelaide (the capital of my state, South Australia) called Stars who had a moderately successful time in the Australian charts. They were a Southern boogie kind of band (that’s Southern US, not Southern Australia).

One of their songs was “Back Again” which opened their 1978 album, Paradise. The songs starts like so:

I’m not much of a gambler, but I’d say it’s a fairly safe bet that Mr Mellencamp had never heard of Stars and “Back Again” (he’d probably never even heard of South Australia) when he wrote “Hurts So Good.”

It’s a coincidence. I think.

Anyway, here are the full versions:

Song of the day: Stars – "Ageless Beauty"

June 3, 2009

Behold “Ageless Beauty”:

The track comes courtesy of Canadian band Stars. It appears on the memorably titled Set Yourself On Fire, their album from 2004. The album’s good, but this song is something else. The weird thing is that no other song on the album sounds remotely like it. The album is full of slightly mellow and arty songs, then “Ageless Beauty” just appears, as if bursting into full sunlight from darkness.

“We will always be a light” indeed.

The video for the song is suitably cosmic, too:

As one of the characters in the video says: “Wow.”
