Here’s Stealers Wheel with the
fabulous superb exquisite magnificent “Star” from 1974:
Stealers Wheel – “Star” (1974)
“Star” was a top thirty hit in England and the US, but I’m mystified as to why it wasn’t a much bigger hit. To me it deserved to be, if not number one, in the top ten at the very least.
The inexplicable failure of “Star” to race up to the top of the charts everywhere confounds me – there’s a hook in every single bar of the song (just try and count the tunes), Gerry Rafferty‘s voice is a sweet, high lyrical tenor, and the song’s rhythm has a gentle swing.
A possible explanation is that people may have paid attention to the lyrics and been put off by their overt cynicism (for a song full of sunny tunes, it’s incredibly bitter).
Ah well. “Star” was written, recorded, and released – and for that I’m grateful. And, courtesy of modern technology, I can play it as often as I want.
