Song of the day: Fountains Of Wayne – "Little Red Light"

January 6, 2012

And the “red” theme continues…

Incidentally, here’s a little coincidence:

Todd Rundgren – “Little Red Lights” (1972)

I’m fairly sure that’s coincidental. Or it may have been a deliberate homage to Todd by those Fountains lads.

Oh, and speaking of coincidences…

Today’s “red” song by Fountains Of Wayne was originally going to be “Red Dragon Tattoo”. I had written this post last week (well, just the first sentence and the choice of song) and scheduled it for today, but – and you won’t believe this – about a day or two after I scheduled it, fellow blogger Steve Simels* (Hi, Steve!) posted “Red Dragon Tattoo” on the PowerPop blog. How’s that for a coincidence?

At least Fountains Of Wayne had another “red” song (see above).

Actually, because I love “Red Dragon Tattoo” I might as well play you that anyway:

I’ll present you with another “red” song tomorrow, but this time it’ll be Australian. (And it’ll be “little” as well.)

Musical coincidences # 110

June 7, 2011

A few days ago the Power Pop blog (Hi, Steve!) posted a song by American band Stag called “Love Her Records”. Steve mentioned that he heard elements of Todd Rundgren (among others) in the song, and one of the commenters, Rushbo (Hi, big R!), specified which Todd Rundgren song: “Couldn’t I Just Tell You”.

This is the similarity that both Steve and Rushbo heard:

Song of the day: Hammerfish – "Couldn’t I Just Tell You"

August 23, 2009

Here’s Hammerfish, an Australian band I know absolutely nothing* about, with a note-for-note remake of Todd Rundgren’s power pop classic, “Couldn’t I Just Tell You” (1996):

The only reason I can think of for Hammerfish to make a carbon copy of that song would be to let Australians know about it, as a sort of local advertisement, in case the original wasn’t going to ever be released as a single Down Under (I don’t know if it ever was).

Anyway, here’s the original:

*Update: Courtesy of the Internet, this is what I now know about Hammerfish: they released one album, Things Look Larger Underwater, in 1995; and one of the members, Ryan Ellsmore, went on to form a band called The Scruffs. And that’s it.)
