Song of the day: Tony Christie – "I Did What I Did For Maria"

June 2, 2012

A few days ago my friend Fitzall (Hi, OneSize!) expressed a degree of embarrassment about admitting to liking a song called “I Did What I Did For Maria” by 1970s deluxe cabaret star Tony Christie.

Well, because I’m someone who has no sense of embarrassment, shame, or “but I was very young” about any music I enjoy listening to, my message to OneSize is this:

“Say It Loud! Say It Proud! I Like This Song!”

And I like this song, too, young Fitzy. However, I have to confess that I haven’t heard “I Did What I Did For Maria” since it was released in 1971 (and I was 10 years old). But in the process of acquiring it for this post I’ve now heard it again – and I must say that it’s exactly as I remember it. And it’s as exactly as I loved it. Plus it sounds a whole lot better than when I heard it all those years ago on a transistor radio. Hooray for modern audio technology!

I liked that so much I think I’ll play you another song from Tony:
