Musical coincidences # 257

June 8, 2012

My Facebook Friend Greg (Hi, Greg!) sent me a coincidence challenge last month that I failed completely.

He rather teasingly began his challenge with “Here’s a nice easy one (just the piano intro)” – but I was stumped.

This is the piano intro:

Trembling Blue Stars – “If I Handle You With Care” (2004) (excerpt)

Nope. I had no idea.

After metaphorically scratching my head for a while, the only thing I could think of was the piano part near the start of Queen‘s “Bohemian Rhapsody“, which I posted ages ago in a different Musical coincidence. (The earlier one was # 11 in this seemingly never-ending series.)

It turns out that I was way off beam, because Greg let me know that what he was thinking of was this:

Bruce Springsteen – “Racing In The Street (1978) (excerpt)

And instantly I realised why I didn’t recognise the similarity: I’m not a Bruce Springsteen aficionado, and had never heard “Racing In The Street”. (I’ve only ever heard about six B.S. tracks in total. Ah well.)

Here are the full versions:

Trembling Blue Stars – “If I Handle You With Care” (2004)

Bruce Springsteen – “Racing In The Street (1978)

Being ignorant in the ways of Bruce the Springsteen, I have two question for anyone who’s very familiar with his oeuvre:

1. Do all his songs involve cars and girls?
2. Do any of his songs have happy endings?
